Contemporary Karen culture varies depending on where people live. In both Burma and Thailand, the Karen have assimilated to various degrees. Usually, those who live in more remote areas retain more traditional Karen customs, while those who live in larger towns or cities gradually tend to adopt either Thai or Burmese customs.
